A 14-year-old boy allegedly accidentally hanged himself from a ceiling fan in his house with the help of a curtain, police said on Tuesday. According to officers, the boy was filming himself when he slipped and fell on Sunday, resulting in his death.

Police suspect the boy may have been making a reel for social media. Officers said a video of the incident was being recorded on his mobile phone, which was found near the body.

“Nothing can be heard in the video. We can see the boy looking at himself with the noose around him… As he is looking into the phone (which was recording at a distance), he seems to lose his balance and slip from the chair underneath him. The chair fell behind him, which is why he couldn’t regain his balance,” said a source in the police.

Deep Chand Bandhu Hospital, where the boy was taken, informed the police of the incident on Sunday afternoon. The boy was declared dead at the hospital, said police. He is survived by his father, a property dealer, while his mother is a homemaker. He also has an elder sister.

“No foul play has been found in the incident. The scene of crime was inspected by the Crime Team. Exhibits, including the mobile phone of the deceased, have been recovered,” said DCP (North West) Bhisham Singh.

“The body was preserved at Babu Jagjivan Ram Memorial Hospital. The post-mortem examination was conducted on Monday and the body has been handed over to the family,” he added.
