A decomposed body was found wrapped in brown tape and sealed inside a plastic bag near the Hindon canal in East Delhi’s Ghazipur area, police said on Sunday. The body was discovered on Saturday evening after a passerby alerted authorities about a suspicious object lying near a dry stretch of the canal, opposite Mulla Colony, officers said.
According to police, a team from Ghazipur police station reached the spot and found a large plastic bag tightly wrapped with brown packing tape. “On opening it, a decomposed human body was discovered,” an officer said. The spot was immediately cordoned off and the crime and forensic teams were called to collect evidence, officers added.
Police said the body appeared to be several days old and was badly decomposed. It has been shifted to a mortuary for identification and post-mortem. Officers suspect that the victim was killed elsewhere and the body was dumped near the canal to destroy evidence. “The exact cause of death will be known only after the post-mortem report,” a senior officer said.
Police said they have begun checking records of missing persons in nearby districts and reviewing CCTV footage from the surrounding area to trace the victim’s identity and movement. “Teams have been formed to scan CCTV cameras, gather local intelligence, and search nearby areas for clues,” the officer added.
A case has been registered, and further investigation is underway to establish the identity of the deceased and the circumstances surrounding his death, officers said. Police suspect that body is of a woman.
