A 20-year-old woman, who was allegedly killed by her mother in a suspected case of honour killing, was strangulated with a piece of cloth and smothered with a pillow, said the police Monday.
The victim, identified as Gulshan, was allegedly killed over her relationship with a tenant, Guddu, who lived in their house in northeast Delhi’s Seelampur area.
Guddu is absconding and police are looking for him, said sources.
“In the early hours of Sunday, the accused realised her daughter was not in the room. She found her daughter with her tenant, who lived in the upper floor of the building. In a fit of rage, she tried to strangle her daughter and then smothered her with a pillow,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police, northeast, A K Singla.

Other members of the victim’s family rushed her to the hospital, where she was declared dead. Doctors informed the police after they saw fingerprints on her neck, said a police officer
The victim’s family members had earlier warned the tenant, who is married, to stay away from her, said the officer.
However, Singla rubbished reports that claimed the victim was killed a day before she was supposed to get married. “The family was discussing a prospective match and the two families were supposed to meet soon. However, the actual date of marriage had not been decided,” said the police officer.
The victim’s family members, however, gave contradicting accounts of the incident. While the victim’s sister said that Gulshan had died of a “heart attack”, another family member, who identified himself as her first cousin, claimed that that the victim was “not treated properly at home.”
He said, “Two months ago, she was beaten up by her brother Yunus over a disagreement they had. Her body had injury marks. She confided in my wife and told her that she just wanted to go away.”
He added, “Gulshan was quite strong, her mother could not have killed her without any help. Some other people must have been involved in the incident. Everything will be clear once police get hold of Guddu”.
