Multiple layers of barricades, stringent checks at borders, and several routes being partially blocked led to traffic piling up, especially near Singhu, Ghazipur and Chilla, in Delhi on Tuesday.
The restrictions, owing to the farmers’ protest, will remain in place on Wednesday, with North and East Delhi expected to be worst hit as movement on the DND flyway will be restricted only to two lanes. Police officers from Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Gurgaon too will be on their toes to make sure agitating farmers do not make it to Delhi.
-In Delhi, the Singhu and Tikri borders are likely to remain shut today. A Delhi Traffic Police advisory for Wednesday stated, “NH-44 beyond the Singhu border has been closed for general traffic and other connected roads going towards NH-44 — Sonipat/Panipat are also affected. Similarly, two lanes of DND are also open for commuters… commuters are advised to plan their journey accordingly and avoid these stretches specifically during peak hours”.
-The Delhi Police said that traffic headed to Haryana via NH-44 should use the Delhi-Meerut Expressway and the Eastern Peripheral Expressway instead. “Traffic coming from Ghaziabad towards Delhi may enter the Maharajpur border near ISBT Anand Vihar through Vaishali-Kaushambi. Traffic coming from Ghaziabad towards Delhi from Ghazipur border may also enter from Khora Colony, Mayur Vihar Phase-3 through paper market, Pragati Marg, Mayur Vihar Phase-3,” said the advisory.
-While Uttar Pradesh’s border with Delhi is unlikely to be shut completely, diversions and strict checks will be in place, police officers added.
-Traffic may be diverted from Ghazipur and Anand Vihar borders if farmers arrive, a UP Police officer said.
On Tuesday, roads leading to the Singhu border remained choked after police installed barricades and allowed vehicles to drive only on a single lane. Heavy congestion was also seen at Ghazipur and Chilla, connecting Delhi to Ghaziabad and Noida. Senior traffic officers said the appropriate force was deployed to both restrict and divert traffic in view of the farmers’ protest. Traffic was restored to normal by Tuesday evening.
ADCP (Traffic), Ghaziabad, Veerendra Kumar said, “The traffic situation was affected in the afternoon as one of the roads on the border was completely blocked… However, after around 3 pm, things started getting normal and both sides were made operational. The traffic was completely clear on Ghazipur, Anand Vihar, and other borders in the evening.”
