The Commissioner of Police (Gurgaon) Surjeet Singh Deswal on Saturday claimed lesser crime was recorded in the district in 2009 as compared to the previous year. Deswal was speaking at a press meet.

The commissioner said,“During 2009,7,232 criminal cases were recorded in the district, while 7,969 were registered in 2008.”

Outlining the police department’s priorities in 2010,Deswal said Gurgaon police will focus on improving the existing traffic management system. “If we could save a few lives on the roads,it will be a worthy achievement,” he said.

The district will also get approximately 400 additional police personnel this year, most of them will be deputed in the traffic department, the commissioner said. The personnel will also be trained in aspects ranging from controlling cyber crime to etiquette and good manners,he said.

Deswal said cyber crime and economic offences increased in 2009. “Fake bank accounts were sold for a mere Rs 8,000 to Rs 10,000 and the anti-social elements could be using these accounts.” All banks have now been asked to verify the accounts opened since January 1,2009.
