Scuffle at LBS hospital between patient’s kin, guards, cross FIRs filed

In a purported video of the incident, which went viral on social media, a security staffer and a Delhi Police constable posted at the hospital are seen allegedly dragging and thrashing the man and his friend while a woman is screaming for help.

Police said cross-complaints have been filed and cases are being registered against both parties.

A scuffle broke out at Lal Bahadur Shastri hospital between a 22-year-old man and security staff over the former allegedly not being allowed to enter the premises with a friend to visit his mother who was admitted there.

In a purported video of the incident, which went viral on social media, a security staffer and a Delhi Police constable posted at the hospital are seen allegedly dragging and thrashing the man and his friend while a woman is screaming for help. Police said cross-complaints have been filed and cases are being registered against both parties.

Police claimed the men argued with the guards and allegedly attacked them. DCP (East) Priyanka Kashyap said, “A PCR call was made late at night. We found that a constable and a guard were assaulted by public persons. Initial enquiry revealed that a man along with his friend wanted to go inside the ward, but they were in an inebriated condition. The guards asked them to go one at a time, but the men argued and assaulted the guard and duty constable. They also damaged hospital property.”

Hospital authorities, meanwhile, have suspended the two guards and have initiated an enquiry. The medical superintendent, however, also said the attendants “behaved badly”.

“What we see in the video is one half of the story. We have CCTV footage and there were six attendants who got involved in a fight. The guards also retaliated in the heat of the moment… We are sensitising our staff and security guards on how they should handle patients and their attendants but at times, the attendants behave badly and I was informed that the attendant in this matter was drunk,” said medical superintendent Dr Sanjay Aggrawal.

A case under sections of assault and Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act has been registered against the two men. Based on the video and the 22-year-old man’s statement, a case is being registered against hospital guards as well, added police.
