A 30-year-old Delhi Police constable died after being hit by an unknown vehicle while deployed at the departure route of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Sunday morning. The accident took place near metro pillar number 136 in Delhi Cantonment area.
“Constable Virender Singh, posted at Palam Police station, was going from one patrol point to another on a government motorbike when he met with an accident,” said Joint Commissioner of Police Deependra Pathak. The matter is being probed, he added.
Preparation was on for the movement of Japanese PM’s cavalcade towards the Indira Gandhi International airport. Virender was going to take over charge at a point before the cavalcade’s movement. In the meantime he met with an accident.
A passerby informed the police. He had sustained injuries on his head and other parts of the body, police said.
Singh, a native of Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan, lived within a police barrack of Palam police station. He joined the force in 2010. He is survived by his wife and a child. A case of hit and run has been registered at Delhi Cantonment area and investigation is on.
