Set in the ’60s,the play opens with a family of rural performers in a nondescript Indian village. With the men out on work, the womenfolk get together and begin retelling the story of Draupadi. One by one,as their playful stories tumble out,the women realise how closely their lives resemble the Mahabharata’s,fiery protagonist. Directed by Delhi-based Films and Theatre Society (FTS),this urban retelling of Indian mythology,is titled Draupadi. The play will premiere on the last day of Rang,a festival of art and culture by FTS,on July 28.

Rang, which started as a theatre festival in 2011,is today a multi-arts festival. This edition will see five

categories — theatre, literature, film, photography and folk performances — featuring artistes from FTS as well as independent performers. “We keep having theatre productions throughout the year,so this year,we decided to include a multi-cultural calendar. The festival is a celebration of different forms of art,” says Atul Satya Kaushik, director of the festival and FTS.

The theatre segment includes in-house productions such as Arjun ka Beta (about a conversation between Yudhisthir and Bhishma),Bade Sheher ke Log (about a man who comes to Mumbai from a small village) and Koobar aur Kaaki (based on two short stories by Munshi Premchand and Dharamvir Bharati).

“Cinesthesia” is a platform for short films of different genres from across the country. In this segment, budding filmmakers and other members of the audience can interact with Onir, director of films, such as My Brother Nikhil,Bas Ek Pal and I Am.

Another segment in the festival is called “Shutter’s Creed”,an exhibition of photographs under the categories “Vintage”,“Streets”,and “Portraits”. “Kalamkaari” is another parallel event that includes seminars, panel discussions and kavi sammelan, with Urdu poet Gauhar Raza among the participants. To witness a performance by folk artistes, grab a seat at “Parampara”.

Rang will be staged at LTG Auditorium,Shri Ram Centre,Hindi Bhavan and Alliance Francaise till July 28. Tickets for plays are priced from
