Three days after a Class 10 student of St Columba’s School jumped to death at the Rajendra Place Metro station, the Delhi Police on Friday said they have recorded the statements of five of his classmates to corroborate the sequence of events. The four teachers, accused of harassment by the student in his suicide note, will be called for questioning soon, officers added.

The police have also asked the school to preserve the CCTV footage from the seven days preceding the incident. The cases of abetment of suicide need a detailed probe before the initiation of the legal action, an officer underlined.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Metro) Kushal Pal Singh told The Indian Express that the investigation is being conducted in a highly professional manner, with full attention to all legal requirements related to the case.

The statements of three of his classmates were recorded on Thursday and two others on Friday. Of these five students, three are said to have witnessed the incident that allegedly drove the boy to take the extreme step.

A senior police officer said that the probe is being conducted with the welfare of the students and teachers in mind. During the process of recording the statements of his classmates, their parents were present.

The processing of recording statements from his classmates and school staff members is still underway.

“Questions such as whether there had been any previous incidents, the behaviour of the accused teachers toward the boy and vice versa, their behaviour toward other students, and what exactly happened on that day were asked of the students,” the officer said.

The boy’s father in the FIR alleged that four teachers, including the school’s principal, had mentally harassed the boy, causing him to take the drastic step.  “(My son’s) classmates told me that in the last four days, (a teacher) had threatened my son that she’ll call his parents and get his TC (transfer certificate) done. (Another teacher) has also pushed my son,” the father claimed.

According to the FIR, the student fell down during his dramatics class and was mocked for it by his teacher. “(The teacher) told him that he was overacting and doing drama…after that she said no matter how much he cried, it didn’t make a difference to her,” the complaint alleged.

An officer said that they will soon call the accused teachers for questioning as well but before that they are collecting the facts.
