Civic agencies plan IDs for properties to boost revenue

The corporations are hoping to triple their revenue by according unique IDs to properties and curbing tax evasion.

Every property in the national capital will soon have a ‘unique property ID’. The three municipal corporations, driven by revenue losses, are planning to map every property in their zones.

The task will be outsourced and each corporation has hired or is in the process of hiring a private firm for this.

Revenue from property tax, corporation officials said, forms between one-third and one-fifth of their annual revenue. But, they said, only 35 per cent of the city’s population pay their dues.

The corporations are hoping to triple their revenue by according unique IDs to properties and curbing tax evasion.

Currently, South corporation has 4.75 lakh taxpayers from a household count of 11 lakh.

The North civic body has 3.35 lakh taxpayers from 10 lakh households and the East civic body has 2.28 lakh taxpayers from over 4 lakh properties.

The South corporation has earmarked Rs 10 crore for the project in the current budget, presented before the House on Monday by Standing Committee chairman Subhash Arya.

But the Congress has objected to outsourcing the process. Leader of Opposition Farhad Suri questioned the need for hiring private firms.
