Delhi saw a pass percentage of 95.18% in the Class 12 board exam results, announced Tuesday by the CBSE, surpassing the national average of 88.39%.

According to the CBSE, 3.08 lakh students registered for the exam from the Delhi region, of which 3.06 lakh appeared and 2.91 lakh passed — recording an overall pass percentage of 95.18. This marks a drop of about 1.81 percentage points from last year’s 96.99%.

In Delhi West, 1.27 lakh students registered for the examination and as many as 1.21 lakh students passed.

The overall pass percentage for Delhi West stood at 95.37, with girls outperforming boys by a significant margin — 96.95% compared to 93.86%.

In Delhi East, the pass percentage this year stood at 95.06. About 1.80 lakh registered, out of which 1.79 lakh appeared and 1.70 lakh passed the examination, as per data shared by CBSE on Tuesday.

Several school principals weighed in on the results.

“This year, the Physics paper was exceptionally tough,” said Sudha Acharya, principal of ITL Public School. “Even students who scored 99.9 percentile in the JEE found it challenging. Physics has traditionally been a scoring subject, but the difficulty level this year affected the performance of many science students, which likely contributed to the dip in Delhi’s overall pass percentage,” she added.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Manisha Sharma, Principal of Venkateshwar International School, Dwarka Sector 10, said, “This time, science as a whole batch has taken a hit as the physics paper was very hard. Toppers have found difficulty in scoring on the paper. I think this is the major reason why overall there has been a drop in the pass percentage in Delhi.”

Alka Kapur, Principal of Modern School in Shalimar Bagh, said, “Students have stopped taking the 12th board exams seriously and are focusing more on CUET. While the issue with the physics paper is a major reason for a drop in the overall pass percentage, as questions were out of syllabus and the paper was too lengthy this year, I believe the MCQ format [in a few exams] also has a role in how students are attempting their papers as they take more time to solve the question and then answer.”

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, meanwhile, congratulated the students of Class 12. In a post on X, she wrote, “Hearty congratulations and best wishes to all the students who performed excellently in class 12th of Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE)! “This success is a testament to your hard work, discipline and determination. May you remain dedicated to your goals and touch new heights in life.”

“To those students who have not got the desired result this time, I want to say — this is just a stop, not the limit of your capabilities. Sometimes the path to dreams takes time, but your sincere efforts and faith in yourself are your biggest strength…,” she added.

In terms of region-wise performance nationally, last year, Delhi West recorded 95.64% after Thiruvananthapuram (99.91%), Vijayawada (99.04%), Chennai (98.47%) and Bengaluru (96.95%). Delhi East came sixth with a pass percentage of 94.51 last year.

In 2023, Delhi recorded a pass percentage of 92.22.
