The Delhi Police recently arrested a brother-sister duo for allegedly snatching gold chains from women in South Delhi and the Kartavya Path area. The police referred to the 24-year-old woman and her 17-year-old brother as ‘Bunty-Babli’ siblings, as the cases they were involved in resembled those committed by the lead characters of 2005 Bollywood movie ‘Bunty Aur Babli’.
“Both accused are drug addicts. Their parents too have a criminal background. Their father was a member of the infamous Thak-Thak gang,” said Ankit Chauhan, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South). He added that their father was involved in a Rs 40 lakh robbery case in December 2018 in the Vaishali police station area of Uttar Pradesh. “During the robbery, he opened fire on two policemen, killing one and injuring another. Their father too sustained two bullet injuries, after which he has been confined to a wheelchair,” the DCP added.
The police have recovered a scooter and gold chains from the siblings’ possession.
The police said that the recent case was reported in Malviya Nagar. A woman was returning on foot with her husband from the main market, when the brother-sister duo allegedly came from behind on a scooter, they said. The boy was driving the scooter, and his sister was riding pillion, they said. The accused woman allegedly snatched the gold chain from the complainant’s neck, and both fled. The police said that four other snatching cases have also been solved with the arrest of the two.
The DCP said that in most cases, it was alleged that a woman had committed the snatching, while a boy was riding the scooter. CCTV footage from the crime locations were analysed, police said. “In the footage, the male accused was seen driving the scooter, while the female accused, seated on the pillion seat, was seen snatching gold chains from the victims. After an in-depth analysis of more than 50 CCTV cameras installed along various routes, the movement of the accused was traced to Dakshinpuri and Ambedkar Nagar,” the DCP added.
With the help of local intelligence, both suspects were identified. Subsequently, based on technical surveillance and human intelligence, the accused were nabbed from Pushp Vihar in Saket.
