Boom Time

Ranjit Barot shot to fame as one of the finest drummers of India when he was merely 17.

Ranjit Barot shot to fame as one of the finest drummers of India when he was merely 17. His name is now synonymous with not just drumming, but singing, composing, arranging and producing music. Famously termed “one of the leading edges in drumming” by the legendary John McLaughlin,Barot’s brand of Jazz Fusion has made a name for itself the world over. In November 2010,he released his highly acclaimed debut album,Bada Boom, featuring musical greats such as Ustad Zakir Hussain,McLaughlin,Elie Afif,Dominique DiPiazza and Scott Kinsey.

Interestingly, the concept behind the album is the the Big Bang theory. “It’s a chronology of the birth of the universe,” Barot explains. The music on the album, however,he describes as “east meets west”. “Because of my growth as a musician,I am able to see a meeting of this,” he says. “We dream in English and are very comfortable doing so.” For example, besides Barot’s explosive drumming, the opening track of the album,Singularity, has guitar solos by Matthew Garrison and McLaughlin, and a veena solo by Punya Srinivas. Similarly,T=0 includes the flute, played by Palakkad Sreeram, acoustic guitar, played by Amit Heri, percussion by Pete Lockett and a majestic performance by The Nirvana String Section.

Barot, son of famous Kathak dancer Sitara Devi ,is currently on an India tour with DiPiazza and Kinsey, and will perform in Mumbai at the Blue Frog,Lower Parel, tonight. The trio will play music from Barot’s album and some music composed by Kinsey.
