A day after the Delhi High Court received a bomb threat email, prompting the evacuation of judges, lawyers and litigants from courtrooms, the Delhi Police said that a case was registered under relevant sections of the BNS and the IT Act on Saturday.
The email, received at 8.38 am on Friday on the official email ID of the HC, was later declared as “hoax” by the Delhi Police. It was sent through outlook.com, an official said.
The case has been registered at the Cyber Police Station of the New Delhi district, and a dedicated team has been assigned to identify the sender’s user ID.
The hoax message claimed that three bombs had been planted on the premises and that the building should be vacated by 2 pm. The emails claimed that the accused had established “links with the ISI in Coimbatore” and threatened to “recreate the 1998 blasts”.
Following this, panic spread throughout the court complex. Within minutes, all judges were moved to the judges’ lounge, and the premises were subsequently evacuated.
The police said that they will be writing to the service provider to get the domain and IP address of the sender. Police also suspected that the mail was sent using a VPN (Virtual Private Network) – an encrypted connection over the Internet which helps the sender hide their identity.
In the last year, there have been over 30 such bomb threats in the capital, to schools and then to hospitals, causing large-scale disruption and panic.
Police had probed previous instances of similar email threats to schools and other institutions, but only a few where VPNs were not used were solved.
The present case may be transferred to the CI (Counter Intelligence) unit or IFSO (Intelligence Fusion & Strategic Operations), which is a dedicated cyber unit of the Delhi Police, in the coming days, if required, the official said.
