The Congress party on Monday blamed the city’s municipal corporations for stalled multi-level parking projects — a key element in Delhi’s plans to reduce air pollution. It alleged that work on such projects had stopped although the UPA government had released funds to the civic bodies to complete them.
Speaking at a protest organised by the party outside a parking lot under construction at Subhash Nagar, Delhi Congress president Ajay Maken said, “The construction of the multi-level parking lot was to have been completed in 15 months. The Rs 30.5-crore contract was awarded to a private company in December 2009. But five years later, it’s still incomplete.”
Alleging that this was the same story across the city, the party blamed the corporations for the sorry state of affairs.
Delhi MP Mahabal Mishra called the BJP-controlled municipal corporations “a den of corruption”.
With the party wiped out in the Delhi Assembly elections, the upcoming 2017 civic elections will be crucial for the Congress to stay relevant in the capital.
“Increasingly, environmental issues are becoming extremely significant politically. We are looking at combining traditional issues such as parking with environmental issues as part of our campaign,” a senior leader said.
