A day after no rain was recorded after the cloud seeding efforts in the Capital, Delhi Pradesh Youth Congress president Akshay Lakra filed a police complaint of “rain theft” against the Chief Minister Rekha Gupta-led government Wednesday.
In its statement, DPYC said Delhi residents were promised rain for 15-20 minutes as relief from rising air pollution, but were misled by the government.
“Planes took off from Kanpur to Delhi in the name of cloud seeding, and then the BJP government put out big advertisements promising rain in Delhi within 15 to 20 minutes, providing relief from pollution. However, no such rain was seen anywhere in Delhi, so we have come to file a complaint against this rain theft,” Lakra said in the statement.
Lakra also said in his complaint that the Delhi Police should also investigate those in the government who aided the “rain theft”.
“Akshay Lakra also appealed to Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta to refrain from misleading the residents of Delhi by engaging in such activities and to take immediate steps to provide relief from pollution,” DPYC said in a statement.
A video of Lakra going to file a complaint showed him and some DPCY workers inside the Parliament Street Police Station. “Baarish Dilli se chori hui hai (Rain was stolen from Delhi). We are the taxpayers. If something is stolen, we have to file a complaint. So please take our complaint,” Lakra can be heard saying in the video.
A Delhi Police officer, however, said that since they could not ascertain any theft, they have not formally received the complaint. The officer added that no case would be registered.
On Tuesday, Delhi conducted its first cloud-seeding experiment to combat the worsening air pollution crisis, targeting pollution hotspots in Northwest Delhi, where the AQI stood at 319 (‘very poor’).
