Days after a 51-year-old auto-rickshaw driver died after falling into a water-filled ditch on an under-construction road in Northeast Delhi’s Harsh Vihar, police said they have written to the PWD seeking details of the construction and names of officers involved in the alleged negligence.
No arrest has been made yet. The deceased, Ajit Sharma, was returning home from Mandoli on Friday when his auto got stuck in the ditch. Sharma tried to push it out but fell into the ditch — deep enough to accommodate an entire auto, according to police.
While PWD officials said the entire stretch was barricaded, bystanders alleged there were no barricades in the middle portion where Sharma drowned.
Due to heavy rains, the road was waterlogged.
“In the letter, police listed the sequence of events and asked the PWD to give details about the construction: Who was overseeing it? Who was the contractor? When did it start? Who was overlooking security? How many barricades were placed?… etc,” said a senior officer, who is part of the investigation team.
The PWD has been asked to reply to the queries at the earliest. Police had earlier said the “ditch” was dug up near the flyover and got filled with rainwater.
