Ambedkar University Delhi (AUD) has begun a probe into allegations by the varsity’s Ambedkarite Students Forum (ASF), which has claimed that the university administration “repeatedly tried to disrupt the programme with the help of security guards” while they were celebrating Ambedkar Jayanti on the campus on April 14.
University authorities said the matter has reached the proctorial board and is under preliminary investigation. “Prima facie, there is an involvement of a student from the university and the proctorial board is further looking into the level of the student’s involvement in the matter,” said Anshu Singh, PRO, AUD.
Singh said the student in question has been barred from entering the campus until the examination is complete.
According to a statement by ASF on Sunday, “While we were celebrating, the posters of our Bahujan icons, including Babasaheb Ambedkar, Savitribai and Jyotiba Phule, Periyar and Manyavar Kanshiram in the campus were taken down. When we confronted the head of the security, they gave an unsatisfactory reply. After our celebration, we noticed that posters had been removed, torn apart and thrown in the dustbin.”
The students have threatened to hold a protest if the administration fails to take an immediate action.
The statement further read that the students met the University registrar and proctor and brought the act to their notice but have received no response three days since the
incident. “The image of Ambedkar and others being torn and thrown in the dustbin has stung us deeply, both mentally and emotionally. We were shocked, dismayed and in a blue funk. We never imagined this to happen in the university, which is named after Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar,” read the statement.
