The Delhi government has decided to allow the celebration of Chhath Puja on both banks of the Yamuna River, with a caveat—only worship will be permitted, not immersion.
“Immersion in the Yamuna is prohibited under existing rules, and immersion does not form part of Chhath rituals,” said Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.
Gupta announced that her government will make special arrangements to ensure devotees can perform rituals comfortably and without inconvenience.
“We have planned a grand Chhath Puja at temporary ghats on both banks of the Yamuna and are ensuring proper arrangements for cleanliness,” the CM said.
Taking into account the growing population of Purvanchal residents in Delhi, the CM noted that Chhath Puja will be organised along both banks of the Yamuna—from Palla in the north to Okhla in the south—with full-fledged facilities for devotees wherever suitable riverbanks are available.
On Monday, the CM held a high-level meeting to review preparations for the celebration of Chhath Puja. The meeting was attended by Art and Culture Minister Kapil Mishra, the Chief Secretary, and other officials.
Gupta directed officials to prepare every stretch of the Yamuna—from Palla to Okhla—for Chhath celebrations. Traditional sites like the ITO and Okhla ghats will also be upgraded, she said.
The CM stated that she would personally inspect the Yamuna and other sites to ensure preparations are thorough. The government will also request water from Haryana if required, Gupta added.
Ahead of Chhath Puja, the Irrigation department has been instructed to remove water hyacinth from the Yamuna. This year, special lighting arrangements will also be made to ensure devotees face no difficulty, officials said.
A total of 929 sites host Chhath Puja celebrations every year.
In addition to the Yamuna banks, Chhath Puja is also organised at the Munak Canal, Mungeshpur Drain, and several artificial ponds across Delhi.
Meanwhile. the Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Monday announced that a Transgender Welfare Board will soon be established. The board will include both representatives from the community and executive members, the CM said.
Through this board, their issues will be understood, and schemes will be designed for their welfare, Gupta added. The CM made the announcement at the National Transgender Awards 2025, organised by the International Transgender Akhada.
