Delhi woke up to a thick smog on Sunday, with pollution levels climbing and visibility dipping across the city. While the overall Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 391 at 7 am, which was said to be the season’s worst, it went down to 352 by 9 pm, still falling in the ‘very poor’ category throughout the day. The city’s average AQI at 4 pm, as per CPCB, was 370.
Of the 39 monitoring stations, 34 recorded the AQI in the ‘very poor’ category. The air quality was the worst in Bawana (411 at 9 pm).
Meanwhile, the Commission for Air Quality Management Sub-Committee (CAQM) on GRAP called a review meeting on Sunday. It was decided that invocation of Stage-III of GRAP is not required at the moment and ongoing measures under Stages I and II of the extant schedule of GRAP will continue in the NCR. “The Sub-Committee, while reviewing the current air quality scenario of Delhi-NCR and forecasts for weather or meteorological conditions made available by IMD/ IITM, noted that at 10 am, the hourly average AQI of Delhi was 391, which significantly improved to 370 at 4 pm today,” read the press statement.
“Given that Delhi’s daily average AQI has since shown a consistent declining trend, with AQI improving to 370 at 4 pm and further improving to 365 at 5 pm today AQI by IMD/ IITM also indicating the overall AQI of Delhi to stay in ‘Very Poor’ category in the coming days, the Sub-Committee on GRAP opined that invocation of Stage-III of GRAP is not required at the moment and ongoing measures under Stages I & II of the extant schedule of GRAP to continue in the NCR,” it added.
However, it added that the Sub-Committee is keeping a close watch on the situation and will review the air quality scenario accordingly.
