The North Municipal Corporation is convening a special meeting of its House on Monday to discuss the deteriorating financial condition of the civic body as well as the “indifferent attitude” of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal towards the corporation.

Both the Congress and the ruling BJP have expressed their apprehensions that the AAP government in the capital “is not serious about tackling the problems” of the city’s civic bodies.

The special meeting will discuss the likelihood of the corporation emerging from its financial crisis as salaries to its employees are due again.

North corporation mayor Ravinder Gupta said, “When the unified MCD was trifurcated, we had loans of over Rs 700 crore and a revenue deficit of Rs 1,000 crore. Even with this kind of a lag, we performed well for four years. We are facing problems now since the government refuses to cooperate and give us our dues.”

The corporations and Delhi government have mutually blamed each other for poor management of resources.

The mayor also claimed that at least “1,60,000 citizens are suffering” as the corporation’s pensions have not been disbursed in 11 months owing to scarcity of funds. He also stated that families of over 60,000 safai karamcharis are facing a difficult time as the “Delhi government refuses to offer any help.

The North corporation has been negotiating with the government for release of funds to the tune of Rs 1,800 crore. “Besides our global share, Rs 500 crore has not been released to us for three years,” Gupta said.
