A case of rioting was registered at the Mayur Vihar police station after trucks carrying cattle, allegedly for slaughter, were intercepted by residents of Chilla village. Police said the angry residents clashed with the truck drivers and stone-pelting followed.
Police said apart from the truck drivers, two residents were injured in the violence. Senior officers said the entire incident had been video-graphed and police was presently investigating as to whether the cattle were being transported illegally or not.
Police said the incident was reported at 11 pm on Saturday, when five trucks — including a mini-truck — were going towards the Ghazipur wholesale market. They were stopped near Chilla village.“The trucks were coming from Najafgarh. Residents claimed that the cattle was being transported for slaughter,” said a senior police officer.

Police maintained that, initially, there were only 10 people at the site. But by the time police reached — after one of the truck drivers made a PCR call — almost a hundred people had gathered.
“The news spread through the village. The residents gathered and beat up the drivers,” said the officer.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Bhairon Singh Gurjar said residents had “pulled out all the truck drivers, their helpers and began beating them badly”. Gurjar said they also “tried to damage the trucks” and “pelted stones at policemen present at the spot”.
Police called members of Society for Prevention of Cruelty of Animals (SPCA) to the spot. Two animals that were injured during the stone-pelting were handed over to SPCA.
Police have registered two FIRs in the case — one against the truck owners and drivers under sections of the IPC pertaining to cruelty to animals and the other against the residents of Chilla village under sections of rioting.
