Four members of a family allegedly died of suffocation after lighting an angithi (coal brazier) in their room in Outer Delhi’s Alipur.
The Delhi Police said they found bodies of a man, his wife and their two minor sons inside their house on Sunday morning. The family lived in Khera Kalan village. The deceased have been identified as Rakesh, 40, his wife Lalita, 38, and their two children Piyush, 8, and Sunny, 7. Rakesh, who hailed from Bihar, worked as a tanker truck driver.
According to the police, the family lit the angithi and went to sleep in their two-room house after locking all the doors and shutting the windows. Around 7 am on Sunday, the officers received a PCR call about some people lying unconscious at their home.
“A PCR van and local staff were rushed to the spot. The room was locked from the inside. The window was opened after breaking the glass and the door was broken open. Four people were found unconscious inside the room in which an angithi was burning. Prima facie, it appears that all four died due to suffocation,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer North) Ravi Kumar Singh.
The police sent a crime team to inspect the house and gather evidence. An FSL team also visited the spot. Officers said the bodies were sent to the BJRM Hospital for autopsy where the doctors confirmed the deaths were due to asphyxiation. No foul play has been detected, the police said, adding that further investigation is on.
On Wednesday, a couple suffocated to death and their two-month-old son was found crying next to their bodies in Delhi’s Dwarka area after they left an angithi burning in their house in Pochanpur village.
