IIT-Delhi has asked the Haryana government for a second extension campus in Jhajjar, sources at the institute said on Tuesday. During an Idea Exchange in Delhi,Hooda said the request for the second campus was being considered.
IIT-Delhi Director R K Shevgaonkar had written to Hooda, stating that the institute wanted two campuses in Haryana. An IIT-Delhi official said,We would like to develop Jhajjar as a research campus and Sonepat for academic expansion. The institute plans to set up a science and technology park,a faculty development centre in Sonepat.
This comes after Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda had announced that an extension of the IIT-Delhi campus would come up at Sonepat. Haryana government had allotted 50 acres of land for the extension campus at the proposed Rajiv Gandhi Education City (RGEC) in Sonepat.
In April,a six-member team from IIT-Delhi had identified a site for the proposed campus. The plot measures approximately 100 acres and is situated close to the AIIMS extension campus.
Former IIT-Delhi Director Surendra Prasad had said since the extension campus was part of the institutes plans, they couldnt expect Ministry of Human Resource Development to fund it.
Asked whether the Haryana government would be ready to finance the project,Hooda said IIT had not put forth any such request yet. IIT officials said finances would only be worked out once the institute gets a letter from Haryana government regarding the land allotment.
The institute is also considering an executive education programme and a continued education programme. It is under favourable consideration by the government, the official said.
