All dug up,Central Delhi now a nightmare

Central Delhi, till now considered a ‘dry zone’,was flooded after five hours of rain on Tuesday, becoming a nightmare for pedestrians and motorists alike.

But the rains over the past few days have not been able to deter the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) and the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) from pausing construction in the area. As a result, after the deluge on Tuesday, the basement parking and ground floor of the under-construction Shivaji Stadium was flooded while Pandara Road and Janpath Lane were under ankle deep water. Water also entered Palika Bhavan,Connaught Hotel and Pratap Singh Building.

With most parts of Connaught Place being dug up for various projects, the business hub of the city resembled a town that had been bombed beyond recognition. The huge craters that dotted the circles of CP transformed into pools by Tuesday. NDMC member Mukesh Bhatt, however, said the rain was not delaying any projects. “With so much digging, there is bound to be some water. But it will dry and will in no way delay our projects,” he said.

Janpath Mini Market, which was dug up last year to install CCTV cameras, has a different story to tell. As of now,a deep fissure runs through the middle of the market where pipes to hold the CCTV wires have to be placed.

While vehicles in Central Delhi moved at snail’s pace, those on foot had a day they would not like to remember. With new footpaths being laid, pedestrians were forced to walk on the main road. Things were worse on CP’s outer circle.
