Water supply in central Delhi is set to improve as the Chandrawal water treatment plant was reopened Sunday after floods forced the closure a few days ago, leading to water shortage for residents. The Okhla water treatment plant started at full capacity on Saturday evening, according to officials.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal tweeted Sunday morning, “Chandrawal water treatment plant has also started.”

Three water treatment plants, through which the city gets drinking water supply, were closed on Thursday after the water level in the Yamuna river reached 208.66 metres.

Due to the closure of these plants, several parts of the city faced water scarcity for the last three days. With two plants reopened, New Delhi, south and central regions of Delhi will get relief, said officials.

Areas in the New Delhi and Central Delhi districts, such as Rajender Nagar, Karol Bagh, Balli Maran, Chandini Chowk, Patel Nagar, Palam Vihar, Delhi Cantt, and New Delhi Municipal Council areas such as INA, Tyag Raj Nagar, were affected.

Delhi Jal Board Vice Chairman Somnath Bharti said the resuming of the Chandrawal plant would restore water supply to the tune of 105 million gallons per day (MGD) in assemblies falling in central Delhi, namely Rajender Nagar, Karol Bagh, Ballimaran, Chandni Chowk, Patel Nagar, Palam Vihar, Delhi Cantt and the NDMC areas.

“Water supply from this area had got disrupted because its raw water supply pump house, which is in Wazirabad WTP, had flooded on 13.07.2023,” he tweeted. The Wazirabad water treatment plant will also likely be opened by Sunday noon or evening.
