Amid pats for cracking the biggest cash heist in the city within 12 hours last week, Delhi Police should be breathing easy, but that is not how it is playing out. As investigation continues, there is also the small matter of keeping a hawk eye on nearly Rs 22.5 crore now in the Okhla Industrial Area police station.
Pradeep Shukla, the cash logistics firm van driver who made off with nine boxes money belonging to Axis Bank Thursday, managed to spend only
Rs 10,500 of the loot on alcohol and charity before he was held in the early hours of Friday. Police recovered the rest of the amount. Now, it is the biggest “case property” ever kept in a police station in Delhi, according to the talk in police circles.
The money is in the ‘malkhana’ (where seized and unclaimed articles are kept) of the police station, which is surrounded by factories, godowns and jungles in southeast Delhi, said sources. At least 25 per cent of the area under the police station’s jurisdiction is covered by a jungle. It is divided into three phases and Okhla extension. One side of the area is towards Haryana’s Faridabad.
Joint Commissioner of Police (southeastern range) RS Krishnia said the money is under multilayer security.
Police have sealed nine boxes containing the money again, said sources. There is additional police presence around the ‘malkhana’ and deployment around the police station, added the sources. A PCR van is deployed round the clock at the main gate of the police station, while other patrolling vehicles have been asked to increase their vigil, said the sources.
The policemen were deployed from different police stations in and around Okhla police station.
An officer said, “The money can only be given back to the bank after the court’s permission.” Sources said police called the bank’s employees Sunday and to count the recovered cash.
