Insulin injections in hand, leaders and workers of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) protested outside the Tihar Jail on Thursday over the jail administration’s alleged refusal to provide insulin to CM Arvind Kejriwal.
The AAP members were holding placards, posters, and banners announcing ‘Give insulin to Arvind Kejriwal’ and ‘Don’t play with the life of Arvind Kejriwal’ during the protest.
Earlier in the day, Delhi Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj produced a letter from Director General of Prisons, Tihar, to AIIMS, New Delhi, requisitioning a diabetologist. Holding the letter in his hand, Bharadwaj said, while addressing the press, “The DG of Tihar Jail has written to AIIMS on 20th April and has said that a diabetologist should be given to us…Till now, these people were saying that we have all the specialists, hospital, clinic, and insulin.”
Bharadwaj said that this means that the jail administration is now negating their own claim that all medical facilities are available at Tihar where Delhi CM has been lodged. He accused the jail administration of relying on readings of random sugar levels and deviating from the standard practice of monitoring fasting and post prandial blood sugar levels.
During the protest, Atishi claimed that there is a “deep conspiracy” behind “stopping” the CM’s medicines. “Today, his sugar level has reached above 300. Any doctor in the world will tell you that if the sugar level is above 300, then it cannot be controlled without giving insulin…clearly Arvind Kejriwal’s life is in danger.” MLA Sanjeev Jha accused the BJP of wanting to kill Kejriwal and said, “Jail administration and L-G are also involved in this.”
AAP demanded that the jail administration should send the CM’s health report to the Delhi government instead of sending it to the LG, and that the CM should be allowed to consult his doctor via video conferencing. “When there is no diabetes doctor in Tihar, then who is doing the monitoring?” Atishi questioned.
Director General (Prisons) Sanjay Beniwal, meanwhile, said that senior diabetes specialists of AIIMS provided medical assistance to Kejriwal through VC and the latter was apprised of his health situation. Regular check-ups will be provided to the CM as and when required, he added.
