A 50-year-old woman died after sustaining burn injuries as a fire broke out inside her house in Southwest Delhi’s Palam village early Tuesday, officers said.
DCP (Southwest) Manoj C said at 2.36 am, they received a PCR call regarding a major fire inside a house at Palam Village after neighbours spotted smoke. A police team rushed to the spot and found four people in an injured state — Pappu (52), Renu (50), Mohit (25), and Shivam (23). Officers said the family was asleep when the fire broke out and smoke spread throughout the house.
They were rushed to a hospital in PCR vans while two fire tenders reached the spot to douse the flames. The woman, Renu, was declared dead on arrival at AIIMS Trauma Centre. The others are undergoing treatment at Safdarjung Hospital with minor burn injuries.
Police said the crime and FSL teams inspected the spot and inquest proceedings under Section 174 of CrPC are underway. Officers said the family had been living on rent at the house for several years now.
Another officer said that while the woman received around 80% burn injuries, the postmortem is yet to be conducted and her death could also be due to asphyxiation.
Delhi Fire Services Chief Atul Garg said the fire was extinguished before the arrival of the fire team. The DCP said the cause of the fire seemed to be a short circuit.
