Union Civil Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu on Saturday inaugurated the renovated Terminal 2 (T2) at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport, a day before it is opened to the public. The reopening of T2 coincides with the start of the winter schedule, Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), which operates IGIA, underlined in a statement.
“Handling nearly 50% of the Northern region’s total passenger traffic and managing nearly 50,000 transfers every day, Delhi is emerging as a preferred transfer hub. And I believe this has been possible only because of DIAL’s continuous push for upgrading the infrastructure and enhancing passenger throughput,” the Aviation Minister said.
“Now, the 40-year-old legacy of the Terminal 2 has been reimagined and revitalised to serve the modern aspirations and growing demand,” he added.
The terminal, originally built by the Airports Authority of India four decades ago, was shut in April to undergo a comprehensive upgrade after Terminal 1 became fully functional.
With the completion of the renovation process, around 120 domestic flights of Air India and IndiGo will now shift daily operations to T2.
According to DIAL, the revamped terminal has been designed as a “future-ready” facility to cater to growing passenger volumes. The new infrastructure, the company said, will focus on enhancing convenience and efficiency for travellers.
A self baggage drop system, which allows passengers to independently check in their luggage by scanning their boarding pass, tagging bags, and dropping them without assistance, is expected to reduce the wait time.
Another major highlight is the installation of six new passenger boarding bridges with autonomous docking technology, the first-of-its kind in India. These bridges, sourced from South Korea, are designed for quicker and safer aircraft handling, while also accommodating accessibility needs such as wheelchair ramps.
Modern ceilings, skylight designs and upgraded flooring are expected to uplift the ambience, according to officials.
Renovated heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, advanced fire safety mechanisms, and stronger electrical infrastructure for uninterrupted operations are among the mechanical and electrical improvements introduced.
The terminal will also feature a new high-resolution Flight Information Display System (FIDS), improved signage for better accessibility, and refurbished apron areas to streamline aircraft operations, a statement added.
