The Jamia Millia Islamia has admitted as many as 27 homeless children to the primary schools run by it in the Capital,officials said. The children were admitted on Monday.
The children belong to Ummeed Aman Ghar,an NGO run by social activist Harsh Mandir,functioning under the Centre for Equity Study,a welfare organisation that provides food,shelter and education to Delhis homeless street children and night shelters to the destitute.
All the 27 children have been exempted from paying school fees,Director of Jamia Schools,Professor M Mujtaba Khan said. These children were taken from an NGO,and the university has decided to give them free education, the director added.
Jamia also runs various mother-child centres at various places in the Capital. At these centres,education is provided to children and women from poor financial backgrounds.
