Two foreign nationals, including a Nigerian citizen, were arrested for allegedly being involved in the smuggling of narcotic substances, including MDMA, in the Govindpuri area of southeast Delhi, the police said on Saturday.

The police identified the two accused as Bernadin, 39, from Ivory Coast, and Ezekiel, 33, from Nigeria, and said that they were apprehended from Lane Number 13 in Govindpuri on Friday.

The duo had allegedly come to deliver a consignment of 61.16 grams of MDMA, commonly known as ecstasy, and 36.64 grams of cocaine, valued at around Rs 10 lakh in the market, to another individual. Officials said that eight mobile phones and Rs 10,600 in cash were recovered from them.

Hemant Tiwari, Deputy Commissioner of Police, South East, said both the accused did not have any previous involvement in such cases. Bernadin was found to have been overstaying in the country since 2019, he added.

According to a statement from the Delhi Police, on July 31, a south east Delhi anti-narcotics squad led by Police Inspector Vishnu Dutt Tiwari, and supervised by Assistant Commissioner of Police Dalip Singh, acted on a confidential tip-off.

The raid was conducted, and both accused were held in Govindpuri. A case under Section 21 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act and Section 14 of the Foreigners Act was registered at Govindpuri police station.

During interrogation, it was revealed that the individuals were overstaying in India and were jobless. To earn money for their needs, they started supplying drugs.

The investigation is now focused on uncovering the network behind this drug syndicate.

Last month, six people, including two Nigerian nationals, were arrested for allegedly duping people by selling them forged lottery tickets in south east Delhi’s Lajpat Nagar area.

In April, the police claimed to have dismantled an international drug cartel with the arrest of two foreigners – one from Nigeria and one from Uganda – and seizure of drugs valued at over Rs 1 crore.
