Days after a 19-year-old Delhi University student, who worked as a newspaper vendor to support his family and fund his education,  was crushed to death allegedly by a speeding car in Rohini, two men were held on Thursday, said police.

The two accused have been identified as Saurabh Gupta, 26, and his uncle Pankaj Gupta, 41. Police said Saurabh was driving the car while Pankaj was in the passenger’s seat.  They are residents of Sector 16 in Rohini and run a children’s play zone in Paschim Vihar, said police.

Amit Goel, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Rohini, said, “At a T-point, they hit the deceased from behind and fled. They also got their vehicle repaired in Panipat in Haryana. They have admitted to the crime.”

Rishal Singh, who was pursuing a BA degree from DU through correspondence, was on his way to distribute newspapers near Sector 15 in Rohini on his cycle when he was allegedly hit by a car around 6.30 am on March 1.

“A traffic patrol team found him lying on the road and called the police control room around 6.30 am… We saw that there were newspapers strewn all around and circulated his picture on some vendor groups. They immediately identified him,” said an officer. Police rushed him to Babasaheb Ambedkar Hospital, where he was declared dead.

Singh had been distributing newspapers since Class 11 to fund his education and help his family tackle financial challenges. He hoped to get a job as a government stenographer, for which he had enrolled in another course.
