The Congress won the Porbandar nagarpalika after two members of the BJP defected when the general board met to form an elected body on Monday. Both Congress and the BJP had won 21 seats each in the 42-member local body.
The Congress-led body formally took charge on Tuesday. BJP members Manjulaben Lodharu and Vinodbhai abstained from voting, reducing the partys strength to 19,and later joined the Congress.
Porbandar city Congress president Jalesh Lakhani said senior leader Arjun Modhwadia had issued an appeal that both parties should run the administration jointly. But his idea was rejected and an election was held on Monday.
The Congress has made Manjulaben the nagarpalika president. We will accommodate Vinodbhai in some committee later, Lakhani added.
Elsewhere, the BJP is considering filing a petition seeking disqualification of the two members.
But for our two members, the Congress could not form a body here, which it did in its lust for power, said Porbandar city BJP president Nilesh Odedara, adding that the party will seek action against the two under the anti-defection law.
In the outgoing local body, the BJP had 30 seats and the Congress 12.
In the recent poll, the BJPs tally was reduced to 21 and the Congress improved its tally by nine seats. Porbandar has a population of 1.50 lakh voters and the Congress claims to include it in the list of Mission Cities under the Jawarhalal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission that makes it eligible for Central funds.
