A partially charred body of a 28-year-old medical student from Tamil Nadu was found in a hostel at Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Jharkhand’s Ranchi on Thursday, the police said, adding that they are awaiting the post-mortem report for further details.

Ranchi Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Chandan Kumar Sinha identified the deceased as Madan Kumar and said that he was a second-year post-graduate student pursuing Forensic Medicine and Toxicology. Speaking to reporters, SSP Sinha added that the police were investigating if the incident was a case of suicide or murder.

“Only the post-mortem will clear whether it was antemortem burning or postmortem burning. We are also looking at his call details because the last time he spoke over the phone was 10.10 pm on Wednesday,” Sinha said.

Speaking to indianexpress.com, an official attached to the Ranchi police noted that they received the information about the incident at around 7 am on Thursday. It took them about three hours to identify the deceased as the body was half-burnt, the official added.

“We have footprints on the roof of the hostel and the forensic teams have recovered some liquid as well. We are carrying out inquiry whether those marks belong to the deceased or if they belonged to any other person as only after the post-mortem will we know whether this is a case of suicide or homicide,” the officer said.

As per the initial investigation, the officer said, the students said that Kumar was an introvert who did not have any issues with fellow students. He was focused on his studies and concerned about his family, the officer added.

According to the police, Kumar’s family members are on their way from Namakkal to Ranchi.
