The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has issued a notice to a contractor for failing to complete the integrated storm-water drain project in the expanded areas of Alandur, Perungudi and Shollinganallur within the stipulated time. The civic body had started the flood-mitigation work to prevent waterlogging in the city and ensure smooth traffic for the public. The project was initiated with funding from the German Development Bank, which amounted to Rs 1,714 crore.
As per the release issued by the corporation, the work in areas like Bhuvneshwari Nagar, Balaji Nagar, Radha Nagar, Madipakkam, Annai Sathya Nagar, Lakshmi Nagar, MCN Nagar, VIP Avenue, Chandrasekar Avenue, Jawahar Nagar, etc in Alandur, Perungudi, and Sholinganallur zones at a cost of Rs 447 crore were not completed within the stipulated time. The contractor has been issued a notice, and similar actions will be taken against other contractors failing to meet the deadline.
Furthermore, the contractor has been asked to put up barricades at the construction sites to ensure the safety of the public and motorists. Failure to do so may lead to a penalty. The residents have also been urged to report any lack of safety facilities in the SWD construction sites by dialing 1913.
