Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) general secretary Premalatha Vijayakanth said on Wednesday that her party was ready to join any alliance that would give it 14 Lok Sabha seats and one Rajya Sabha seat in the polls this year.
“This is going to be the first election we will face without Captain. There are only four options in front of us: we should go with either DMK, AIADMK or BJP or contest the election alone. Though the majority of district secretaries expressed their wish for the party to go solo, of three other options, they wanted the party to join hands with whichever alliance provides us 14 Lok Sabha Seats and a Rajya Sabha seat, similar to our 2014 formula (with the BJP),” said Premalatha, who has taken over as the party chief after its founder, her husband Vijayakanth, died.
Addressing reporters in Chennai after holding a meeting with DMDK district secretaries, Premalatha said that the party would form committees for election-related work in the upcoming days. She also said the party would hold rallies in remembrance of Vijayakanth in all four zones in Tamil Nadu.
Premalatha denied speculations that both the AIADMK and the BJP have been holding talks with the DMDK, saying that her party was yet to begin seat-sharing talks with any party. Last month the BJP-led central government posthumously conferred the Padma Bhushan on Vijayakanth, the actor-turned-politician popularly known as Captain.
As per a statement issued by the DMDK, a resolution empowering Premalatha with the authority to decide on the alliance was among the 10 that were passed in the meeting.
