The elections of the Chandigarh unit of the Youth Congress were on Sunday declared null and void by the Foundation of Advanced Management of Education (FAME),an agency that looks after the elections of the Youth Congress. The members will now be moving a representation to the agency to review its decision.
The elections were held on August 27,in which Maninder Singh received the highest votes. He polled 322 votes,164 votes more than his nearest rival Harmail Kesri. A representation was given against Maninder Singh stating that there was a case pending against him in court. FAME thus took the decision to declare the election null and void. This means that the election of the office bearers will have to be held once again.
Maninder had held victory celebrations after the results were declared. He was participating in various activities of the party as president of the Youth Congress along with other members of the team.
A total of nine nominations had been filed for the election for 10 posts. Yadvinder Mehta polled 54 votes,Ravinder polled 23 votes and Amit Kumar 21. The other four contestants had received votes in the single digits and were disqualified as for becoming an office bearer of the state unit a minimum of 21 votes are required.
Maninder said that his nomination had been accepted by the returning officer who conducted the election. It should have been rejected then if there was a problem. The case against me has been settled after a compromise was reached. The cancellation of the election is not fair, he said.
The team has now decided to move a representation to FAME seeking a review of the decision. Congress district president H S Lucky said that the team has worked hard during the by-elections of the Municipal Corporation held recently. He added that the cancellation seems to have been done due to some misunderstanding and a representation will be moved against it.
