A special court in Mohali has barred the Vigilance Bureau (VB) from conducting further raids at the premises of former Punjab cabinet minister and senior Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia without prior notice. The court directed that if any property assessments are to be carried out, the vigilance team must inform Majithia’s counsel, advocate Arshdeep Singh Kaler, at least 24 hours in advance.
The decision comes as Monday saw a raid by the VB at the Amritsar residence of the jailed SAD leader. This was the second raid on Majithia’s Amritsar residence in the case. The first raid was conducted on June 25, following which the Vigilance Bureau arrested him in the case of disproportionate assets worth over Rs 540 crore.
Speaking to the media, Kaler said the court has restricted the VB to assess only those properties specifically listed in the court order. He alleged that instead of being led by the investigating officer, multiple vigilance teams conducted surprise raids on Tuesday at the former minister’s premises in Delhi, Amritsar, and Majitha, and deliberately leaked the operation to the media for publicity.
“The court has immediately ordered a halt to such unauthorised raids,” Kaler stated. The judge clarified that future visits to the premises must be strictly for evaluation purposes and only after prior notice to the defense. Additionally, the court directed the Vigilance Bureau to submit complete video recordings of Tuesday’s actions as evidence in the next hearing, scheduled for July 22, 2025.
The VB registered a disproportionate assets case against Majithia on June 25 at its Mohali headquarters. He was produced in court on June 26, following which the court granted a seven-day remand. During the custody, statements were recorded from several key figures including former DGP Siddharth Chattopadhyaya and ex-ED deputy director Niranjan Singh.
Majithia was again presented in court on July 2 and remanded for four more days till July 6, after which he was sent to judicial custody for 14 days. On July 12, Majithia filed a petition citing security threats in jail.
