The Shiromani Akali Dal Sunday claimed that Amritpal Singh surrendered before the police as per the advice of Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh.

“Following the peaceful manner in which Waris Punjab De chief Amritpal Singh handed himself over to the law, the Aam Aadmi Party government should proceed against him only as per law and put an immediate end to the prosecution and harassment of innocent Sikhs,” party spokesperson Daljit Singh Cheema said.

On March 25, the Jathedar had asked Amritpal to surrender before police and cooperate with investigation.

Cheema said now that Amritpal Singh has “submitted to the majesty of the law”, it was incumbent on the AAP government to explain why it had created a “fear psychosis” on this issue, according to the statement.

“The actions of the AAP government till now have only served to defame the Sikh community worldwide, besides resulting in a flight of capital from the state and led to a sense of insecurity amongst Punjabis. Communal tensions have also been deliberately inflamed,” Cheema alleged.

Punjab BJP chief Ashwani Sharma said that Amritpal’s arrest was as per the law of the land. “Nobody will be allowed to disturb peace and harmony of the state,” he said.

In Bengaluru, Congress leader Randeep Surjewala sought to know if Amritpal was connected with someone in the state or central government.

Addressing a press conference, he asked, “Who helped Amritpal escape in the first instance? Where di he remain hidden? Who gave him shelter? Who are his accomplices? Powers in Pakistan are supporting him”. He asked who were “the co-conspirators of Amritpal in India and elsewhere” and what action was the Centre and Punjab government planning to take against them.

Congress leader and former chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi, while campaigning for party candidate for Jalandhar Lok Sabha bypoll, took a dig at the AAP government saying they failed to catch Amritpal, who eventually “surrendered”
