Sachin to lead Haryana in North Zone athletics

International discus thrower Sachin of Rohtak will lead the Haryana athletics team in the 24th North Zone Junior Athletic Championship to be held from August 4 to 6 in Meerut.

CHANDIGARH: International discus thrower Sachin of Rohtak will lead the Haryana athletics team in the 24th North Zone Junior Athletic Championship to be held from August 4 to 6 in Meerut (Uttar Pradesh). According to Raj Kumar Mittan Secretary,Haryana State Athletic Association,the selection of athletes for Haryana team was made on the basis of the performance of the athletes during the 26th Haryana State Junior Athletics Championships held at Sonipat on July 21 and 22. Haryana have been the overall champions for the last eight years. Athletes from UP,Delhi,Punjab,Rajasthan,Himachal Pradesh,Chandigarh and J& K will take part in the North Zone Junior Athletic Championship.

The team: Junior boys (U-20): Bharathari (100m ,200m),Ravinder Khasa (100m,200m),Parveen (400 m),Mandeep (800m),Anand (1500 m),Vikash Malik (5000 m),Pardeep Kumar (110 m.h),Sunil Kumar (110 m.h.),Vijay Singh Malik (400 m.h),Pardeep Arya (long jump ,triple jump),Satish Kumar (long jump),Mukesh Singh (high jump),Rajesh Kumar (pole vault),Dilbag (pole vault),Surender Singh (shot put),Satish (shot put),Ajit Singh (discus),Parmod (discus),Satender (hammer),Jaiveer (hammer),Vijay (javelin),Abhishek (javelin),Neeraj (10000m walk),Karan Rathee (10000m walk),Ajit Singh (decathlon),Narender Kumar (decathlon).

Badminton tourney on anvil

CHANDIGARH: The Chandigarh Badminton Association will be holding Chandigarh State Badminton Championships in different age groups like Under-10 (Singles),Under-13,Under-15,Under-17,Under-19 and Senior boys and girls. Entries can be given to Satish Bhatia and Kabir in Sector 42,Pomila at Sector 23 and also to Surinder Mahajan at Panjab University Badminton Hall. Last date of sending entries is August 13. Interested players falling in the junior category should submit their Date of Birth certificates.

Chess meet from August 4

CHANDIGARH: The Chandigarh Chess Association will organise Under-9 and Under-19 Open and Girls Chess Championship,at St. Xavier’s School,Sector 44,Chandigarh,on August 4 and 5. Two boys and two girls in each category will be selected to represent Chandigarh in the nationals to be held at Gujarat (Under-9) from October 1 to 10,and Rajasthan (Under-19) from September 5 to 14. U-19 WC has produced stars: Bhajji

Dubai: Off-spinner Harbhajan Singh believes that India has benefited from the under-19 World Cup,as a number of top performers such as Virender Sehwag,Yuvraj Singh and Virat Kohli,apart from himself,have come through these tournaments. With 11 days to go for the start of the U-19 World Cup,which will take place in Australia,Harbhajan said,”India has been lucky to find some very good and talented cricketers from the ICC U-19 World Cups.” “I am sure this time too we will be able to find some cricketers from the tournament. Who knows,maybe in 2015,someone from the India U-19 side will be a key member of the senior team at the Cricket World Cup 2015. It is a tournament of immense importance for cricket in general and Indian cricket in particular,” said Harbhajan,who played in the 1998 under-19 CWC in South Africa.
