Amid continuous heavy rainfall lasting for up to five hours, the repair of the breach in the dhussi bandh on the Sutlej River continued at Gatta Mandi Kaso area of Jalandhar district on Saturday. With another spell of heavy rainfall, water levels in already flooded villages rose further resulting in additional difficulties for the residents.

Despite the challenging conditions, ‘kar sewaks’ (volunteers) and Rajya Sabha MP Balbir Seechewal did not halt the repair work even for a minute.

The 925-feet-long breach in the bandh took place after land caved in and is being repaired from both sides. While on one side, Seechewal is leading the embankment work and has already repaired approximately 155 feet, the Drainage Department is sealing the breach from the other end.

Even as Seechewal appealed to the people to come forward and help in filling sandbags and provide diesel for the earth movers and tractors engaged in the repair efforts, the situation became more critical in the afternoon when the tractors carrying sandbags had to return due to the increase in the water level.
