Reconsider ‘Dilli Chalo’, Haryana govt tells farmers, imposes Section 144 in Ambala

Delhi Police has reportedly not granted permission for the farmers’ protest in Delhi, citing the ongoing Parliament session.

dilli chalo Farmers have also been asked to obtain written permission from the Delhi Police before proceeding with their march to Delhi.

Two days ahead of the farmer unions’ proposed Dilli Chalo march, the Haryana government has imposed Section 144 in Ambala and issued notices at the protest site near the Shambhu border. Notices have also been sent to the homes of two farmer leaders in Punjab.

The notice states that Section 144, which prohibits the gathering of five or more people, has been imposed in Ambala. It further advises farmers to reconsider their Dilli Chalo programme scheduled for December 6, citing law and order concerns. Farmers have also been asked to obtain written permission from the Delhi Police before proceeding with their march to Delhi.

Interestingly, the notices were delivered to the homes of Jaswinder Singh Longowal, president of BKU Azad, in Sangrur, and Sarwan Singh Pandher in Pandher village, Amritsar district.

“This shows that the Punjab government is acting as a puppet of the central government by sending their employees to deliver notices issued by the Ambala Deputy Commissioner’s office to farmer union leaders,” said Guramneet Singh Mangat, a leader of the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM). He added, “One notice has even been pasted near the protest site at the Shambhu border in Punjab.”

Sarwan Singh Pandher, coordinator of KMM, however, remained defiant. “We will go to Delhi as planned. Only one jatha will march on December 6 under the leadership of five to six farmer union leaders. We assured Ambala SP Surinder Singh Bhoria two days ago that we will proceed peacefully, yet they continue to create hurdles. This exposes their double standards. Regardless, we will remain peaceful,” Pandher said.

It is worth noting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Panipat on December 9. Sources suggest the Haryana government is concerned that the farmers’ march could pose a security threat.

Additionally, Delhi Police has reportedly not granted permission for the farmers’ protest in Delhi, citing the ongoing Parliament session. Sources confirmed that Delhi Police is in communication with Haryana and Punjab authorities regarding the matter.

Meanwhile, protest sit-ins continue at the Shambhu and Khanauri borders, organised by the KMM and SKM (Non-Political). Farmers are demanding the legal implementation of MSP as a guarantee, along with other demands. Jagjit Singh Dallewal, coordinator of SKM (Non-Political), has been on a hunger strike since November 26 at the Khanauri border, which entered its ninth day on Wednesday.
