Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Himachal Pradesh are likely to get a welcome respite from record-high temperatures from Tuesday with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting thunderstorms and lightning with gusty winds at a speed of 30 to 40 km/h at isolated places. The weather department has also predicted heavy rain, thunderstorms and lightning with hail and squalls at a speed of 50 to 60 km/h on Wednesday.
The IMD has also issued an advisory for Himachal Pradesh amid the possibility of an ‘orange’ alert due to heavy rains. People have been advised against going to areas where thunderstorms are likely.
In light of the weather forecast, the region is likely to see a temperature drop of at least 5 degrees Celsius in the coming days.
As of Monday, Punjab’s Patiala was the hottest in the state with a temperature of 45.2 degrees Celsius. With the state recording temperatures up to 5 degrees above normal, several districts have been recording maximum temperatures between 43 to 45 degrees Celsius. At 43.1 degrees, Chandigarh also recorded the hottest day of the season on Monday.
In Haryana, the maximum temperature was recorded at 45.4 degrees in Sirsa, Pandu Pindara in Jind and Balsamand in Hisar.
Even in the hill state of Himachal Pradesh, Una district recorded a temperature of 42.4 degrees Celsius on Monday. In several cities of Himachal, the temperature on Monday was as high as 40 degrees Celsius.
Night-time temperatures have also been high during the past few days with several places in Punjab recording temperatures higher than 25 degrees Celsius – 29.5 degrees Celsius in Chandigarh, 29.1 degrees Celsius at Faridkot and 28.4 degrees Celsius in Patiala and Ludhiana.
The IMD centre at Chandigarh said while the monsoon is expected to reach Punjab during the last week of June, pre-monsoon showers may begin after June 10.
