Temple priest Sanjay Kumar,who was accused of rape and other crimes,was sentenced to 10-year rigorous imprisonment on Tuesday. A fast track court on Tuesday held him guilty of kidnapping and raping a minor girl of Barara.
The court awarded punishment on charges of rape,threatening,kidnapping,impersonation and also under the Protection of Child from Sexual Assault Act. A fine of Rs 16,000 was also imposed on him.
Kumar,who has a notorious record,had come to Barara three months back to hide his identity and took shelter in a temple impersonating himself as a priest. He used to hold kathas and the audience included women and school girls. He kidnapped one of the girls by coaxing her while she was on way to her school and raped her several times. He was arrested with the girl at the Kurukshetra railway station. He had earlier taken the girl to Yamunanagar and Haridwar.
During investigation,the police found out that he had given the Kanpur Police a slip after he was booked on charges of murder. In his defense,he pleaded in court that he was eunuch and was unable to have sexual relations with female. But his assertion was negated by the report presented by a doctor stating that he was physically fit.
