The wife of BSF Constable Purnam Shaw, who was detained by Pakistan Rangers after he inadvertently crossed the international border last week, arrived at the Chandigarh airport from West Bengal’s Hooghly on Monday to gather information from senior BSF officers about efforts to bring back her husband.
Rajani, who is pregnant, her son and some other relatives arrived at the airport from Hooghly district’s Rishra on their way to Punjab’s Ferozepur to meet senior BSF officers. However, she was not allowed to speak with the media at the airport.
Shaw, posted with the BSF’s 182nd battalion at the Ferozepur border, was escorting a group of farmers near the border on April 23, stepped away to rest under a tree and inadvertently slipped into Pakistani territory and was subsequently apprehended by the Pakistan Rangers, BSF officials said.
Pakistan Rangers did not appear for a flag meeting with BSF officers on the Indo-Pak border in Ferozepur ever since Sahu was taken prisoner.
Rajani had earlier said if her queries with BSF camp officials remained unsatisfactory, she would travel from Ferozepur to Delhi, seeking a meeting with Union Home Ministry Amit Shah and other government officials. “I cannot tell you how tense I am, as BSF officials are only asking me not to worry. There is no clarity. I am very worried, so I planned the visit amid my condition,” Rajani had said.
Rajani had initially planned to board the Amritsar Mail on Sunday evening, which travels to Ferozepur from Howrah via Pathankot, but could not get a confirmed ticket.
Shaw’s parents, who hail from the Harisabha area of Rishra, said they would appeal to the central government to do everything necessary to ensure their son’s return.
The incident came at a time when relations between the two countries had hit a low in the wake of the Pahalgam terrorist attack, which claimed 26 lives.
