Makhan Singh,an agriculturist based in Badhi village,Mohali, stole the limelight with his bid of Rs 9.5 lakh for PB 65 Q0001 which he intends to put on his Gypsy King costing around Rs 5.5 lakh. The reserve price for the number was set at Rs 50,000.

Makhan Singh also bid for another number (PB 65 Q0065) for Rs 4 lakh which he bought for his second-hand Yamaha motorcycle costing around Rs 3,000. The auction of fancy numbers was conducted at the District Transport Office (DTO),Mohali,on Tuesday.

The auction saw new and some old series registration numbers going for hefty prices. It was conducted in the presence of

District Transport Officer Sukhvinder Kumar. The DTO’s office became richer by Rs 71.24 lakh by the end of the evening.

Today’s auction saw a better response than previous ones. During the auction of the ‘PB 65 F’ series, the number 0001 was bought for Rs 2.5 lakhs while ‘PB 65 N 0001’ fetched just Rs 60,000.

Having a fetish for fancy numbers,Makhan Singh said that it was likely that he would transfer the number PB 65 Q 0065 when he buys a new car — maybe a Mercedes. Till that time, the number would stay on his bike.

The auction was stopped for some time during the bidding for PB 65 Q0007,as the bid suddenly jumped to Rs. 7 lakh after a bid was announced for Rs 1 lakh.
