Man from Italy becomes Chandigarh’s first Omicron case

The 20-year-old man came to India on November 22 and was tested positive for Covid-19 on December 1. He is fully vaccinated and has been asymptomatic throughout his quarantine.

A 20-year-old fully vaccinated resident of Italy, who arrived in India on November 22 to meet his relatives, on Sunday became the  first person in Chandigarh to test positive for Omicron, the new Covid variant that is more transmissible than the Delta strain and reduces vaccine efficacy but causes less severe symptoms.

As per details, the man was under home quarantine and was found Covid-positive on retesting on December 1. As per protocol, he was then put under institutional quarantine.

Sources said seven high-risk family members of the man had also been put under quarantine and tested under the RT-PCR method. All of them have so far tested negative.

As per details, the man who tested positive for Omicron, has been asymptomatic throughout.  He is fully vaccinated with the Pfizer vaccine which he took in Italy. He has been kept in isolation for the last 11 days.
