A 25-year-old Haryana native working in New York was allegedly shot dead by unidentified people on July 12 while returning to his place of stay after work, said his family members on Saturday.

The deceased identified as Monu Verma hailed from Nissing village of Karnal district, the police said, adding that his family received the information about his death on the intervening night of July 12-13.

Monu’s father Pawan Kumar Verma told reporters that the family had sent Monu to New York three years ago through a donkey-route (visa-on-arrival service used by Indian nationals to illegally enter countries such as US and Canada) by taking a loan of Rs 35 lakh.

“Monu had recently got a job as a door-desk operator, and was living with one of his friends who informed us about the incident,” said Pawan Verma, clueless on how to bring back his son’s body home.

Monu’s family members mentioned that he had initially gone to Portugal and stayed there for a few months before moving to the US.

“I arranged Rs 35 lakh by taking a bank loan, sourcing some money from a few friends and relatives to send him abroad. I am yet to repay that debt,” Pawan added.

Monu was the youngest of five siblings including three sisters and a brother.
