The toll in the hooch tragedy in Amritsar rose to 23 Wednesday with two more deaths being reported from a Majitha village even as police arrested six persons, including two Delhi-based businessmen who allegedly supplied the chemical used in preparing the spurious liquor.
Those arrested from Delhi were identified as Ravinder Jain and Rishabh Jain, promoters of Delhi-based firm Bharat Heavy Chemicals.
Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said an Amritsar Rural Police team arrested the duo. “One of the main accused, Sahib Singh, was in contact with Rishabh Jain, as revealed through his WhatsApp. It is suspected that Sahib Singh received a consignment from Jain, which was used to manufacture spurious liquor,” Yadav posted on X.
Deputy Inspector General (Border Range) Satinder Singh said a total of 18 persons were nominated in the case of which 16 were arrested. “There are clear instructions from CM Bhagwant Mann and DGP Yadav that the strictest action be taken against those who were involved in the spurious liquor sale.”
As part of the crackdown, Amritsar Rural Police raided the house of sarpanch Tarsem Singh in village Jethuwal, under the Attari Assembly constituency, and claimed to have recovered 30 bottles of country-made liquor. Police said Tarsem Singh, an Aam Aadmi Party member, managed to escape, but his younger brother Kuljit Singh was arrested. An FIR has been registered at Kambo police station.
